Brazil-Mexico Economic Complementation Agreement

  Background and Negotiations
   

On 03 July 2002, Brazil and Mexico signed the Agreement of Economic Complementation No. 53 (known as ACE No. 53). Two days later, Mexico and the MERCOSUR member countries - of which Brazil is part -signed the Agreement on Economic Complementation Nº 54 (ECA Nº 54) with the aim of creating a free trade area.

Eight years after the signing of the Agreement, on 10 May 2010, in Mexico City, both countries met to discuss the deepening of ECA Nº 53. On May 12th of the same year, Brazil and Mexico announced the preparation of a Strategic Agreement for Economic Integration.

On 08 November 2010, Brazil and Mexico announced the official beginning of the negotiation process for a Strategic Economic Integration Agreement.

On May 2015 Brazil and Mexico took steps to increase bilateral trade and investment over the next years by signing a series of agreements towards the expansion and deepening of the Economic Complementation Agreement No. 53. Two months later, from 7th to 8th of July, they held their first round of negotiations for the expansion of ACE No. 53. Another round of negotaitions took place in Mexico City, on 10-12 November 2015. The following round of negotaitions was held in Brasilia from 16-18 February 2016. The fourth round of negotiations finished in Brasilia on July 7, 2016. The fith round was held in Mexico City on October 1, 2016.

  Entry into Force
   

The Mexico-Brazil Agreement of Economic Complementation was deposited with the ALADI as ECA No 53 and entered into force on 02 May 2003.

Three additional protocols to the agreement have been issued.
