On November 24, 2022, at the Pacific Alliance Summit in Mexico, the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development of Canada and the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries of Ecuador launched exploratory talks toward a potential free trade agreement between Canada and Ecuador.
The 1st round of negotiations of the Trade Agreement between Ecuador and Canada took place virtually from April 29 to May 8, 2024. In this first meeting, the negotiating teams exchanged bilateral proposals for the texts of 20 disciplines that were included in the 28 chapters that this new generation agreement will contain.
The Second Round of Negotiations for the signing of a Trade Agreement between Ecuador and Canada took place virtually from June 10 to 18, 2024.
On September 10, 2024, the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries announced that the negotiation process between Ecuador and Canada, which formally began in April of this year, has advanced successfully thanks to the joint work of the negotiating teams, with three rounds of negotiations and several additional meetings between sessions.
On October 25, 2024, Canada and Ecuador concluded the fourth round of trade negotiations that focused on the continuation of dialogues on the 26 disciplines addressed by this new generation agreement, whose objective is to promote trade, facilitate investments, and promote sustainable development.
