Canada - Ukraine
  Background and Negotiations
   

On 17-21 May 2010, in Kiev, Ukraine, Canada and Ukraine begun free trade negotiations. The second round of free trade negotiations was held in Kiev, from 16 to 20 May 2011. The third round of negotiations took place in November 2011 in Ottawa, Canada. The fourth round and fifth rounds were held in Kiev in April 2012 and September 2012, respectively. On January 26, 2015, Canada and Ukraine issued a statement announcing their political commitment to accelerate work on free trade negotiations. Six rounds of negotiations were held between 2010 and 2015. On 14 July 2015, the governments of Canada and Ukraine announced the conclusion of negotiations toward the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA).

The Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA) was signed on July 11, 2016.

  Modernization
   

On January 27, 2022 Canada announced the strengthening of trade relations with Ukraine and that they would proceed with negotiations on the modernization of the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA). On April 2023 the Government of Canada published a summary of the negotiated outcomes. Canada and Ukraine issued a Joint Declaration on Conclusion of Negotiations for the Modernization of the Canada-Ukraine FTA on April 11, 2023.

On October 17, 2023 Canada's Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, tabled the text of the modernized CUFTA in the House of Commons. The modernized CUFTA includes dedicated new chapters and provisions on trade in services (including financial), investment, temporary entry for business persons, telecommunications, digital trade, labour and the environment, among other areas. New chapters on inclusive trade have also been added to ensure that the benefits of CUFTA are more widely shared, including in the areas of: small and medium-sized enterprises; trade and gender, and the first-ever trade and Indigenous Peoples chapter that Canada or Ukraine has ever included in a concluded free trade agreement.
