On 13 February 2017, Ecuador and El Salvador signed a Partial Scope Economic Complementation Agreement within the framework of the 1980 Treaty of Montevideo.

El Salvador approved the Ecuador-El Salvador Partial Scope Economic Complementation Agreement on 20 July 2017. Ecuador, for its part, ratified the agreement on 21 August 2017. The agreement will enter into force thirty days after the Parties have notified each other in writing of the completion of their respective internal legal procedures.
