  Background and Negotiations

Mexico and Peru signed an economic complementation agreement (ECA No. 8) on March 25th, 1987, under the framework of ALADI.

In December 2005, both countries began negotiations to broaden and deepen the agreement to include all goods and to develop a legal framework that could serve as a basis for a free trade agreement (FTA). Since 2006 they have held 8 rounds of negotiations. The last round took place in Peru in November 2007. Protocol Nº. 9 to this agreement extended the application of the ECA Nº. 8 until 31 December 2009.

In September 2009, the parties agreed to extend the ECA Nº 8 for another two years, reviving the negotiation process for this agreement. Mexico and Peru concluded negotiations and signed the Mexico-Peru Trade Integration Agreement on April 6, 2011.
