  Background and Negotiations
   

The United States and Japan issued a Joint Statement on September 26, 2018 indicating that they would enter into negotiations for a United States-Japan Trade Agreement on goods, as well as on other issues including services. The United States and Japan met on April 16, 2019 to continue negotiations. On September 25, 2019 the United States and Japan reached an agreement in the areas of market access for certain agriculture and industrial goods, as well as on digital trade.
