On March 17, 2020 the United States notified Congress that it will negotiate a trade agreement with Kenya.
In May 2020 USTR published a summary of the negotiating objectives. On July 8, 2020, the US and Kenya formally launched negotiations towards a free trade agreement.
On July 14, 2022 the United States and Kenya Announce the Launch of the U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership. Both governments agreed to pursue enhanced engagement leading to high standard commitments in a wide range of areas with a view to increasing investment; promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth; benefiting workers, consumers, and businesses (including micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises); and supporting African regional economic integration.
On February 10, 2023 the U.S. and Kenya concluded a round of meetings of their Trade and Investment Partnership.
On May 23, 2023 USTR published Trade and Investment Summary Texts proposed by the U.S. side in negotiations between the United States and Kenya under their Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP).
