  Background and Negotiations
   

On 10 September 2010, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama agreed to launch negotiations for an FTA with Peru. While the negotiations would be developed jointly, the agreement would have a bilateral basis between Peru and each of the participating Central American countries. The first round of negotiations was held in Peru on 08-12 November 2010. Guatemala participated as well in this round of negotiations. The second round took place in Panama from 17 to 21 January 2011. The third round was held from 28 February to 04 March 2011 in San Jose, Costa Rica. A mini round of negotiations took place in Panama from 04 to 08 April 2011. The fourth round of negotiations was held in Lima, Peru from 02 to 06 May 2011. During this round, Peru and Panama, as well as Peru and Costa Rica concluded negotiations of their respective free trade agreements. On 25 May 2011 Panama and Peru signed a free trade agreement. Costa Rica and Peru, in turn, signed a free trade agreement in San Jose, Costa Rica on 26 May 2011. Guatemala and Peru reached concluded their free trade negotiations on 13 October 2011. The entry into force of the Peru and Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala FTAs, respectively, is scheduled for the first semester of 2012.

On April 17, 2018, Guatemala and Peru announced that they will define a roadmap to resume negotiations to conclude the free trade agreement.

  Entry into Force
   

On 04 July 2013, the Guatemalan Congress ratified the Free Trade Agreement between Peru and Guatemala.

With the objective of facilitating the enter into force of this FTA, signed in 2011, on September 23 and 24, officials from both countries held a first meeting to review the Modifying Protocol of the Peru – Guatemala Free Trade Agreement.
