In March 2002 the President of the Dominican Republic and the Prime Minister of Canada announced that they would initiate exploratory discussions to consider bilateral free trade negotiations. Canada and the Dominican Republic announced the launch of negotiations towards a free trade agreement on 7 June 2007.
