On 21 january 2014, the Prime Minister of Canada annouced the launch
of negotiations to expand and modernize the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement. The first round of
negotiations took place in Israel, from 3 to 9 February 2014. The second and third round of negotiations
were held in Ottawa, Canada on 26-29 May and 7-11 December, respectively.
On 21 July 2015, the Government of Canada announced the conclusion of negotiations toward an expanded
and modernized Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA). Canada and Israel signed the modernized
Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) on May 28, 2018 in Montreal, Quebec. The 1997 Canada-Israel
Free Trade Agreement continues to apply until the Canada-Israel Free Trade
Amending Protocol 2018, signed in Montreal on May 28 2018, enters into force.
The Modernized Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) entered into force on September 1, 2019.
