On 8 February 2006 Chile and Malaysia initiated the first meeting
of the joint study group on the feasibility of an FTA between the two countries. The second meeting was
held 25-26 May in Santiago, Chile. On 19 April 2007 Chile and Malaysia began conversations to negotiate
a free trade agreement.
The first round of negotiations took place in Kuala Lumpur on 4-5 June 2007. The second round of
negotiations was held in Santiago de Chile on 23-24 October 2007. The third round of negotiations was
completed in Kuala Lumour on 29 April 2008. The fifth round of negotiations was held in Kuala Lumpur
in March 2009.The sixth round of negotiations took place in Santiago, Chile in 03-07 August 2009. The
seventh round of negotiations was held on Kuala Lampur in September 2009.
On 14 May 2010, after ten rounds of negotiations, Chile and Malaysia concluded a free trade agreement.
On 13 November 2010, on the occasion of the APEC Leaders Meeting in Yokohama, Japan, the
governments of Chile and Malaysia signed a free trade agreement.
