Background and Negotiations |
|
|
On 05 June 2012, Colombia and Costa Rica announced the launch
of free trade negotiations. On 15 June 2012, both countries signed the General Framework for the
Negotiation of the agreement.
Negotiations between both countries began with the first round of negotiations in Bogota, Colombia,
between 30 July and 02 August 2012. The second round of negotiations began in San Jose, Costa Rica
on September 24, 2012. The third round of trade negotiations was held on 22-25 October 2012, in
Cali, Colombia. The fourth round concluded on 07 February 2013. On 06 March 2013, Colombia and Costa
Rica concluded free trade negotiations. On 22 May 2013, Colombia and Costa Rica signed the Trade Agreement
(FTA) between the two nations.

Entry into Force |

On 08 April 2014, the Colombian Senate approved in first debate the
Colombia-Costa Rica FTA. In turn, the Costa Rican National Assembly approved the FTA on 24 April. The
Colombia-Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement was ratified by Costa Rica on 05 May 2014. On 5 November 2014, the
Colombian Senate approved in second debate the Colombia-Costa Rica FTA.
On 6 April 2016, Colombia's Constitutional Court approves FTA with Costa Rica.
On 29 June 2016, in the framework of the 11th Summit of the
Pacific Alliance, which was held in Puerto Varas,
Chile, trade ministers of Colombia and Costa Rica agreed on August 1, 2016 as the date for the entry into
force of the FTA between both countries.

Implementation of the Agreement |
|
|
On November 28 and 29, 2018 Costa Rica and Colombia held
meetings and agreed on the importance of deepening trade, promoting investment and taking advantage
of the opportunities offered by both markets.
Within the framework of the Thirteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Colombia and Costa Rica signed the deepening of the Trade Agreement that the two countries have had in force since 2016.
