On 12 September 2011, Colombia and Japan established a study group to define the negotiations of an
Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). On September 25, 2012 Colombia announced that it will negotiate an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Japan in the short term. The first round of negotiations for the Colombia-Japan EPA took place on 17-18 December 2012. The second round of negotiations was held in Bogota, Colombia, on 20-24 May 2013. The third round took place in Tokyo from 28 October to 1 November 2013. The fourth round of negotiations was held in Bogota from 10 to 14 February 2014. The fifth round took place in Tokyo on 12-16 May. The sixth round was held in Bogota, Colombia from 14-18 July. The seventh round of negotiations took place in Tokyo from 8 to 12 September. The eighth round of negotiations was held from 27 to 31 October 2014, in Bogota, Colombia. The ninth and the tenth rounds took place in December 2014 and March 2015, respectively. The eleventh round of negotiations was held in Tokyo, Japan, from 18-22 May 2015. The twelfth round took place in place in Bogota, Colombia on 14-17 July 2015 and another round was held in Tokyo, Japan, from 31 August to 4 September 2015. The latest round of negotiations took place from 14-18 April 2016, in Bogota, Colombia.
