MERCOSUR and Singapore launched negotiations for a free trade agreement on July 23, 2018
in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The first round of trade negotiations concluded on October 9, 2018
in Montevideo, Uruguay. A new round of trade negotiations took place in Argentina on April
22-26, 2019
On September 30, 2020, there was a meeting of the chief negotiators to analyze the progress
and evaluate the best way to move forward with the negotiations.
On March 30, 2021, Chief Negotiators of MERCOSUR and Singapore met to analyze progress in the
negotiations between both parties with the aim of signing a state-of-the-art, ambitious, balanced
and comprehensive trade agreement that will strengthen the commercial relationship, increase the
trade of goods and services, as well as the establishment of investments.
On August 26, 2021, Mercosur and Singapore Chief Negotiators met in order to evaluate the technical
work carried out and define the relaunch of the negotiations and a work schedule with a view to the
conclusion of a trade agreement between both parties. On September 29 and 30 and October 1, 2021, a
new round of negotiations between Mercosur and Singapore was concluded. During this round, it was
agreed to reactivate and restart work in the different negotiating groups with a view to concluding
a free trade agreement.
On February 25, 2022, concluded the Third Round of Negotiations to advance
towards a Free Trade Agreement between Mercosur and Singapore. The topics discussed in the negotiating
groups were access to the goods market, rules of origin, commercial defense, technical barriers to trade,
investment, electronic commerce, services, telecommunications, government procurement and institutional
aspects, with coordination and supervision meetings with Chief Negotiators.
The fourth round began on April 4 and, on this occasion, the negotiating groups will see access to the
goods market, rules of origin, trade in services, public purchases, investments, telecommunications and
electronic commerce.
On October 17, 2023, the meeting of Chief Negotiators of the Mercosur – Singapore Agreement was held in Asunción, an opportunity in which the parties ratified the full commitment to deepen the reciprocal relationship through balanced and effective access to the market for goods, services and investments.
