Mexico and Turkey met between 15 and 19 December 2013, in Ankara, Turkey to sign a Joint Declaration for the establishment of a Framework of Strategic Cooperation and Partnership. In it, both countries anticipated negotiations towards a free trade agreement.

The first round of negotiations was held in Ankara Turkey from 14 to 16 July 2014. Four more negotiation rounds have taken place since July 2014. The last one was held in Ankara, Turkey between 21-24 July 2015.
