Nicaragua and Taiwan's trade relations date back several decades, with a bilateral trade agreement signed in 1967 and an Economic Complementation Agreement signed by Nicaragua, along with the governments of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras on 13 September 1997.
The objective of the agreement was to expand
cooperation in the areas of trade, investment,
transfer of technology and in the financial sector;
and to develop a Plan of Action that would allow the
parties to determine the existence of conditions necessary to start negotiations for a free trade agreement. A joint declaration issued at the IV meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Central American Isthmus and the Dominican Republic, and Taiwan, in Taipei on 21 August 2003, reiterated the willingess of these parties to initiate free trade talks at an opportune time.
